Learn how to quickly install or move a Windows 10 UWP app or game to another disk drive or a partition. This article provides step-by-steam guide in both installing a new app and moving an already installed app to another drive..

Install apps and games to another drive

In order to install your Windows 10 apps and games to another hard drive or partition, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Settings app. (You can find its icon in the Start menu or search for it by typing “Settings” in the start menu.)
  2. Click on the “System” category.
  3. Click on the “Storage” subcategory.
  4. Under the heading “New apps will be installed to:”, select the drive to which you would like to install your apps and games.(If you want to install to an external drive, plug it in to your device for it to show up on the list.)
  5. Install your app or game from the Windows Store or by downloading an APPX package

Note 1: This method will only work for apps from the Windows Store and apps that are using the APPX installer. Apps using the traditional installers (such as a .exe or .msi) will typically have their own options to select install locations in the installer.

Note 2: Not all apps allow you to install them from the primary storage device. If you try to install such apps, it will prompt you to install it on your primary storage device instead.

Move apps or games that are already installed to another drive

If an app or game you want to put on another drive is already installed, this is how you move it.

  1. Open the Settings app (You can find its icon in the Start menu or search for it by typing “Settings” in the start menu.)
  2. Click on the “System” category.
  3. Click on the “Apps and Features” subcategory.
  4. You will see a list of all your installed apps. (You can even filter the list by drive on which they are installed or by searching a keyword for a specific app.)
  5. Click the app you want to move and click on the “Move” button.
  6. You will see the list of drives you can move your app to. (If you want to move it to an external drive, plug it in to your device for it to show up on the list.)

Note 1: You can do this for multiple apps at the same time. You don’t need to wait for an app to finish moving before moving another app.

Note 2: If the “Move” button is grayed out, that app cannot be moved.

Note 3: If you would like to move a Steam game, there is a different way to do this. See this article (coming soon).
