When I just tried it and searched “*” and got 731 and I have the setting correct in the store to show all apps. It seams it acting weird for everyone. But Then it hit me. The only way to work out the true number is to get it from Microsoft as depending on the country we are in it may not show some.
I am in the UK and that’s why I think I don’t see the full amount as others do.

No worries mate. Yes this is going to be a fantastic year for Microsoft indeed. I had an idea about metrofying the desktop a bit more; maybe it’s something that you can write a blog about, just an idea. You know how the gestures in windows 8 and the apps themselves involve swipping from the edges to access hidden setting and features. What about if Microsoft changed the desktop so that to access the taskbar (which is hidden) you swipe up from the bottom. Also to access the recycle bin and perhaps control panel etc, you swipe down from the top, so that the desktop appears like any other app. I suppose this can be sort of accomplished already by auto hidding the taskbar. Moving on to something else, i hope somebody creates a halo like metro game app, where you can obviously use touch gestures to play the game. It would also be nice if somebody creates a game controller app so that old flying shooter games like sega games e.g. (bomberraid) could be controlled by using touch gestures or by tilting the device, etc. Finally i wanted to ask you for your opinion on the windows surface pros thickness which is 13.5mm. When you look at other pro tablets with the same specs e.g. Samsung series 7 slate pc which is 12.95 mm and the Samsung ativ smart pc pro which is 11.89 mm they are a bit thinner. So my question is why doesn’t the windows surface pro tablet compete in thickness with its competitors devices, even though Microsoft explained in their keynote that they can manufacture the magnesium metal to such small thicknesses.
Thanks
Dan
Ps: I dislike the macworld website, they are humiliating us and the new innovations from Microsoft.

Hi Dan,
On that point about Metrofying the Desktop, and think MS was afraid of the flashback they’ll will receive if they changed too much. Just look at all the negative reaction for removing the Start button, and removing Aero-Glass. For the Enterprise, the cost of re-training people will be enormous if the Desktop is changed too much. Of course MS could completely Metrofy everything, but they had to weigh the cost. That is why they flattened the desktop and Office 2013, that is closest they could go.
On the argument of Surface thickness, I honestly don’t know. There are tradeoffs you have to make when designing devices. I am sure Microsoft have its reason. Think of battery size which is directly proportional to Battery life. They may have chosen thicker battery to ensure longer battery life which will result in a thicker device. Intel is not yet efficient compared to ARM processors, so this is the tradeoff we have to live with to be able to use our devices as fully Work and Play compatible device.

Hi McAkins guy (sorry don’t know what to name you as),
Do you think that the new trim windows 8 or more specifically the x86 programs will run well on atom tablets and have no lag, etc. As I’m looking at the Samsung ativ smart pc, the asus Vivo tab and the Lenovo thinkpad tablet 2 that run on the next gen atom processors. Would it be worthwhile getting the surface pro? The surface pro has a 42.5 wh battery, based on this and the thickness of the tablet do you think it may last at least 8 hours like the atom tablets? I just can’t decide which soc to go with atom or i5, battery life or performance, but I hope they each have these things. What is your professional opinion on this?
Thanks

Well, I can tell you already, you will not find lag on any of the Windows 8 devices, whichever you choose. I have an x86 tablet here upgraded from Win7, I don’t see any lag on Metro Apps. I was clocking 2hr average on it with Win7, now with Win8RTM I am getting 4hrs average.
What will be your decider is what you want to do with such a device. You’ll have to decided if you want use for work, for play or for in-between. If you want a play-only device you’ll get the SurfaceRT or any WindowsRT device, if you want an in-between device, you’ll get an x86 Atom device, then you are sure to run Metro and traditional apps albeit not very powerful Desktop apps.
If you really want to work on the Tablet then your choice will be an x86 device with core i5 and above. Then you can run any software that your desktop can run. So in this case SurfacePro is the way to go. And if you’re an Artist, the Pen that comes with SurfacePro is a boon.
As for me I am getting SurfacePro for myself, and SurfaceRT for the misses. Microsoft guarantees 8hrs on any Surface device, and I am sure other OEMs will match or exceed this baseline. So Christmas is coming early for most of us this year. Curious to know what you’re getting. Keep me posted.

Hi
Nice, im sure you and your misses will love the windows surface devices. Anyway I did previously own the Samsung series 7 slate running windows 7 which I assume you have but with windows 8. I only got about 2 maybe 3 hours at most and was not happy with the device itself, so I returned it, however I did like the physical appearance and Wacom digitizer. The device I would want is one which is suitable for entertainment purposes as well as proffesional use such as the surface pro, however I do not think the x86 devices will have a long battery life which is what i require, until haswell arrives in 2013. Anyway i will keep you posted even if it means I have to wait for surface 2 with haswell that will be arriving in 2013 lol. Oh by the way are you interested in windows phone 8 devices too, here are some thinks for the tablets I mentioned prior as well as the window phone 8 devices that will be coming out.

Hey
42 days left till the release of surface! In regards to the tablet I will be choosing it is very likely that I will be getting a surface pro, as it speculated to have a low power 10 watt ulv core i5 chip so there should be better battery life than I originally thought. However if for some reason it doesn’t get at least 8 hours I might be opting for the asus transformer book. If this doesn’t have at least 8 hours I will be going for lenovos thinkpad tablet 2. And funnily if none of them get at least 8 hours of real heavy use then I will wait for surface 2 with haswell or ultrabook hybrids with haswell in 2013. So ultimatly my decision rests on the battery times of these devices when they come out. 2080 – 1319 apps in one day = cool bananas.
Ciao

Well, like I mentioned in the Disclaimer in the post, different people will see different results depending on your location and access times, and Cloud propagation. That is why I provide the screenshot of the number I am seeing at my end.
Those of us tracking the Windows 8 Store have been clamoring MS to provide the Store API with which we could all get a consistent results from the Store. Until then, Store results will be a moving target for everyone.

Searching via Search Charm with “*” parameter is a general search and will always given you inconsistent results. It depends on where you live on the planet and the localization settings of you OS. I have replied severally on this topic in this post, (see the Disclaimer above). I am sure this will be resolved when MS decides to release the Store API.

I think Market dynamics will force them to drop the price else they’ll price themselves out of the market. Also, there is going to be a lot competition from other OEMs like HP and Dell on the x86 front, so I expect quality/price ratio to determine device price. That is why MS in entering the x86 market 3 months later, to give its OEMs a leeway.

Hi
Hope all is well, did you find the links I posted previously useful? Still deciding on whether to get an atom tablet or a core I5 one, hmmm. Oh, do you like the idea of the windows surface pro tablets stylus being placed on the side of the device where it is charged? I think I prefer a capacitive stylus that slots into the tablet and is charged via the screen when in close proximity to it. Dunno, why they didn’t put more thought into this. While on this subject do you believe the windows surface pro will feature a ulv chip? I previously thought it did, but now I’m not sure, have you heard anything about the specifics of the chip.
Thanks

The Surface Pro pen is an active digitizer Wacom Pen, they are better than Capacitive pens (Pens designed for Touch tablets). The Surface pen only attaches to the side via Magnetism to hold it in place.

3350 apps OMFG that’s fantastic!
McAkins in regards to letting you know what device I would get, i have gotten the samsung new series 9 ultrabook and i am getting the windows 8 upgrade for it. It is extremely thin, light, powerful, has a large multi touch trackpad, has excellent battery life and it is beautiful too. I thought long and hard about this decision and realised that the upcoming tablets excluding the windows surface pro will be a rip off basically for what you get. And even in the case of the surface pro I might get version 2.0 with the new haswell processor, as the tablet will have 15-20 hours battery life, will be the thickness of the 3rd gen ipad and will therefore be super light too, therefore delivering the true purpose of a tablet being mobility/portability. At the moment the surface pro is nice but doesn’t deliver this just yet. Anyway I’m really looking forward to windows 8 on my ultrabook. Let me know in the comments what device you get when you get it.
Thanks
