Review: Despicable Me: Minion Rush for Windows

Despicable Me Minion Rush (1)

Preview and Install

The Windows Store is filling up with more and more high quality games that are a blast to play. One of the latest in the series is called “Despicable Me: Minion Rush”. This is the latest in a series of fantastic games released by Gameloft. The game is based on the animated film Despicable Me, where you play as one of the cute, yellow, minions.

Your mission is to run and collect as many bananas as you can. You will have to dodge all sorts of stuff and fight off villains. There is a giant golden cup for the best minion. Can you be the one? The game works great with the Xbox 360 controller. You can use the keyboard as well as touch inputs to play the game.

The entire gameplay is very well animated. Attention to detail has been noted in every single corner of the game, from scenery, to obstacles, to the characters. There is a different animation for bumping in to different types of obstacles. The voice acting is great and you truly become immersed into the game. Here is an example: in the game you will meet your fellow minions who will take your hand and swing you forward. The camera changes angle and the entire scene is immersive like a movie. There is humor throughout the game, from the opening scene to bumping into your minion friends and having them hint your computer screen.

Despicable Me Minion Rush (5)

I really enjoy this game, and I think you will too! Best of all, it is free at the time of this writing! So go and grab it, and start your adventure engines!

Tweetium, A Full Metro and unique Twitter client in the Store

Via the news reached us that Tweetium has been released in the Store. Tweetium is not just another twitter client. It is a unique experience that is true to the Metro principle. This is what the official Twitter app should have been as far as I am concerned. Continue reading

Warning: Serious UX Ambiguity in the Twitter App

Be warned, there is a serious UX discrepancy in the Twitter that’ll delete your DM tweets if you’re not careful.

See, when you dock the Official Twitter app, and you go to Direct Message, if you accidentally click/touch any of the messages, the Twitter App selects it and brings up the App bar. Now this is where the crux of the matter arise. If you’ve been using Windows Phone a lot that button "B" means "Dismiss" or "Cancel". Most especially because you’re looking at button "A" and thinking ok, that is to delete the tweet. No not at all! If you press button B twitter app deletes your tweet and there is no way to bring it back. No warning, no nothing.

It is when you maximize the twitter app, you see what those buttons do:

Of course you should have known this, but if you spend your days with Twitter docked like I do, and you don’t delete tweets and threads on daily basis, you’ll forget what those button do. Muscle memory in Windows Phone has also conditioned you to press that Button B to dismiss, cause in WP, that trash-bin icon is to really delete.

The question to Twitter Inc. then is, how many people spends their day deleting Tweet Threads? Why not use the trash-bin icon for deleting tweets and stop this ambiguity? This is frustrating cause I just deleted some important tweets with Joost. Problem with this all is that if you accidentally select a tweet and the app brings up this App bar, it covers the tweet entry box, and all you want to do is get rid of the app bar, so like in Windows Phone you just press the button B to dismiss without thinking. :S

Please fix this Twitter. This is bad UX design decision. I just hope MS will enforce the use of the ellipsis (…) in Windows 8.1 Apps so you can at least click it like in Windows Phone and know what a button does. This is really bad as it is right now. We need consistency in both Windows and Windows Phone design guideline. Like, right now!

Twitter Official App is now in the Store!

Trust Twitter Inc to release their app for Windows 8 while I was sleeping Sad smile. Most of you probably heard the news already. The Twitter official App is now in the Store. A lot many people, including yours truly, are disappointed with the app because it is just so basic. Given the amount time we’ve had to wait for the app (since November 24th 2012), does Twitter really need Six months to release such an App? Looks like what someone could do in a weekend. There are definitely apps in the Store that beat Twitter’s app. It may be me, but the current version of the App doesn’t support Lists. I would have expected a generous use of Windows 8 panoramic features to show columns, but you’re constantly going in and out of screens. Messages for example is buried deep you have to know where to find it. This is really lame Twitter. Definitely not what we expected. Absolutely an anti-climax. Like a good friend of mine said:

Obviously other goodies are coming later on. But “why release an incomplete app?” like Richard said in another tweet. I guess they realized they’ve waited too long.

Here is the description from Twitter of the app in the Store:

With Twitter, you can watch the world unfold like never before.
** Get real-time stories, pictures, videos, conversations, ideas, and inspiration all in your timeline.
** Follow people and your interests to get unfiltered access and unique behind-the-scenes perspectives.
** Express yourself with photos, videos and comments.
Twitter for Windows 8 brings you all the design, features and functionality of Twitter combined with the fast and fluid technology of Windows 8:
– The Discover (#) icon shows you new topics from people in your network and other information like Trends and Who to Follow suggestions. But nowhere else can you scroll through Discover stories horizontally. Smoothly move through a collage of Tweets, pictures, links and article previews that make the most of your device.
– The Share charm makes it easier to tweet links, pictures and opinions to your followers from anywhere in Windows 8. Reading an article in Internet Explorer about Hawaii? Swipe in from the right edge of the device, tap the Share charm, add your comments in the Tweet and hit send.
– Create the ultimate screen with Snap view on Windows 8. Drag Twitter into the narrow side of the screen and slide in another favorite app. You can stream a live video while you watch the conversation about it unfold on Twitter. Then use the Share charm to join the discussion.
With many thanks to our over 200 million users!

My apologies for my disappointment people. I was just not not happy with a debut from Twitter that doesn’t support Lists. One positive news about all this though; those of you having headaches from crashing twitter clients in Snapped mode. News is that this client is stable in snapped mode. At least some usefulness for you there.

Don’t let me spoil the party for you. Please go right ahead and download from Store via the source link below.

Anonymous Account Suspended on Twitter

5 Days ago Twitter suspended the regularly used account by Anonymous [@YourAnonNews]. Though Anonymous occasionally [okay maybe regularly] violates Twitter’s T.O.S. but this is the first time we’ve reported on a suspension. Soon after, Anonymous released this tweet from their backup account:YANbackup-suspensionONanon

When media sources contacted Twitter for a comment they had this to say;
“We don’t comment on individual accounts for privacy reasons.
Though Anonymous did use their backup account to communicate to a small percentage of their supporters and followers this could have potentially hurt Anonymous’s ability to communicate to their 826,000+ followers on their @YourAnonNews Account compared to the 25,000 followers on their YANBackup account. Some said that Twitter was asking for it by suspending the account since Anonymous is known for causing mayhem on websites they don’t find quality in.

As of 12/24 Twitter has re-activated the account and Anonymous is back to their daily routine. Anonymous has not negatively commented about the incident on their main Twitter account yet but activity is back to a normal pace.

Tweetro+ App lands in the Store!

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him!” The elusive Tweetro App is back in the Store as Tweetro+. You have to have been living under a rock to have missed the whole shebang over Tweetro and Twitter these past weeks. Yeah, Tweetro got too popular for Twitter so they had to cut it down to size by reducing its tokens to 100K. Our buddy at carried the whole story. You can peruse the whole details there.

So now Tweetro is back as paid App, because Twitter wants in on the piece of the Pie of course. But at $10.00? I find that rather steep for an unofficial Twitter client. You have to bear in mind that Twitter itself is creating its own client as we speak, and it will eventually compete with Tweetro+ whenever they released it. And there is the possibility, even more probable that Twitter’s own client will be free in the Store as it will be a joint effort between Microsoft and Twitter. So Lazyworm may be pricing Tweetro out of the market, and that will be very sad as this is a good Twitter client. Curious here to see  how this all will play out.

For the new-old App itself, I am taking a very close look at the description and screenshots, I can’t see any thundering differentiating feature as far as I can see. Of course its polished and professional and all now, but it doesn’t diverge much from what we’ve already seen in its Free incarnation. Following is the description of the paid version in the Store:

Tweetro+ is an elegant Twitter client for Windows 8 and regarded by many as the best Twitter experience on the platform.
Included in purchase:
– Exclusive access to Tweetro+ (limited number of installs)
– 2 Twitter account slots (you can add up to 5 via in-app purchase)
DISCLAIMER: We cannot guarantee that this app will continue to function in the same way that it does in its purchased state (subject to any changes in Twitter’s API, rules and regulations).

Real-time streaming of tweets (timeline & search results)
In-app browser
Pin multiple tweet columns to main hub
Photo browser
Custom views (snapped, portrait, landscape)
Semantic zoom for bird’s eye view
Multiple account support

So, there it is, the much awaited Twitter Client is back. Question is will you take the bait? What do you think about the price. Let me know in the Comments. Note there is no Trial mode, you buy this or you don’t, so I assume most of you that knows the app wouldn’t mind to buy without trial. But for new users? I think they should have added a Trial mode. Anyway, download the app now via the Source Link below.

Does Twitter Want to Kick out Tweetro from the Windows Store?

Tweetro LogoLet me just start by saying that I am very disappointed in Twitter. Well, we know that with Twitter’s updated version of the API, new developers are limited by Twitter’s new and strict API rules. As I understand it, the new API only allows up to 100 thousand user tokens, after which a program trying to access additional user tokens must consult twitter for permission. This means for third party twitter clients, it can only have up to 100 thousand registered users without needing Twitter’s approval. The latest victim of this new enforcement appears to be the very popular Windows 8 app, Tweetro. Continue reading

Store News:

Here is another run of the News from the Windows Store. First my sincere apologies for missing the news run last weekend, I just couldn’t catch a break, had to go native and please the family. Coupled with an absorbing project at my day job you can understand my spottiness also online, via Twitter etc.

So here we are two weeks after General Availability, as Microsoft love to call their public deployment of their wares, and the Store is still waxing strong. As you can see from the Stats above, we grew 3656 apps in two weeks. Divide that by two and you have the per week number. Question is can Microsoft keep this momentum up? Time will tell. You can also see the exponential growth on the graph. Funny thing is, there are bonehead bloggers out there bad-mouthing the new platform for lack of apps. There you have almost 10000 apps, and how many does an average person have on their device again? Of course you can argue most them are chaff, yes, so it is with all App Store that I know as of today. Its all about Quality Apps. There are quality apps in the Store right now and more are still coming.

I will not burden you by listing all apps that debuted these past two weeks, but the Quality ones you will see I have already blogged on this blog, and the other that are worthy of mention are listed here below. I am sure you’ll find something for yourselves in the list. In the category of news is the return of the Trackage app in the Store, it was pulled for some reason, now it is back. Also HP has decided to make their Windows 8 Introductory Demo app available to everyone. You can now download the app in the Store on all devices and not only on HP devices anymore. Flixster also made news this week by releasing a major Update that fixed most issue with the app. I refused to blog/mention the app because of various issues with the app. Now, the app is fully usable so you can go download it. My personal favorite this two weeks have to go to the two Apps released by Telerik in the Store. Please see my post about them on this blog.

Talking of Chaff in the Store, have you also noticed that our friends from India own the Windows App Store? There are more Apps from India than every other localized countries combined in the Store. The Windows Store is in this way of much more value to someone from India than any other part of the world. This should be an incentive for other countries to catch-up. Let kids learn to code for crying out loud! Anyway, the number of apps now in the store has reached an impossible level that it is humanly impossible to be mentioning each app. I am now very selective in what I blog or mention, so if you see me blog an App here on this site, you can be sure it will be worth your money. That doesn’t mean I will not miss some apps, so please I welcome your suggestions if you think I have missed some killer app that you really love.

Back on the Stats. Have you noticed Entertainment and Education Categories left Games in the dust the past weeks? Simply incredible if you ask me. Education takes the crown, seconded by Entertainment and Game came on a measly third. The Education increase can be attributed to a few companies releasing books as Apps filling the Store like there is no tomorrow. Good for number chest-thumping for Microsoft, but makes it difficult to see the forest from the trees in the Store. I am still watching the Store like a hawk for the big Apps announced in the GA Keynote. ESPN is still not in the Store for example. I’ll keep you posted. Pardon me that I didn’t have time to collate the Paid/Free Apps numbers this week, I owe you one on that for next week.

On that note, I’ll leave you with these Notable Apps that I didn’t have time to blog but worthy of your attention:

Users Recommendations:
Radiant Defense

That is it for this week, I hope to be back next weekend with collated news from the Store. In the meantime, be good to one another, and have a great week ahead.

[Got a tip for me? Or noticed anything out of place? Wrong URL maybe? Hit me on Twitter (@McAkins) to let me know. Thanks already.]

TweeTRO updates in the Store

LazyWorms has just released version 1.2.3 of TweeTRO in the Store. I guess the most important for me is the removal of Auto-Load of Tweets URLs, which constitute a serious security hole. Now you can turn it off in the Options. Yes, the app now have options reachable via the Setting Charm. Below summarizes the changes in the application:

Release notes

– Real-time streaming of tweets within ‘Timeline’ and search
– Mention suggestions when tweeting
– In-app browser options and URL bar
– Options to disable auto-loading of links
– Ctrl+N keyboard shortcut to compose tweet
– F5 keyboard shortcut to manually refresh
– Ctrl+Enter keyboard shortcut to post a tweet

Bug Fixes:
– Semantic zoom control for desktop
