Designing the Windows Folder for the Mobile Era

Here is a little suggestion for Microsoft Windows Design team to improve Windows for the modern/mobile age. I have been fighting this past week to get my VHD boot device upgraded to Windows 8.1 as I have grown tired of waiting for Microsoft to fix this problem. If you’ve not heard, Microsoft choose to leave out the upgrade of an official Install Scenario of Windows called VHD Native Boot. This is an officially supported Install option for Windows since Windows 7, but without warning to the community, they are not going to upgrade you from Windows 8RTM to any later version if you’re running in Native Boot. IPT Inc. Brings iOS Apps to the Windows Store: Lucky Voice

Microsoft has recently been touting the ease with which Apple iOS Developers can port their apps to the Windows Store, it seems the message has started to pay off. We are beginning to see more and more famous iOS Apps and Games in the Windows Store. What more, Microsoft has relaxed the Metro Design 2013-07-26_171350Language requirements for Apps, this means iOS app are now fully welcomed in the Store, skeuomorphics and all!

A good example of this are the apps from IPT Inc which now has a plethora of iOS apps in the Windows Store. Don’t doubt me, the quality of these Apps is very good, no doubt about it. But if you’ve been used to seeing flat Metro GUI apps in the Store, these iOS apps just jump at you. The first of IPT app I’ll like to mention is this Lucky Voice App in the Store as shown above. I can assure you this is a direct port of the iOS app as even Dialog boxes shows the typical iOS controls. The famous “Back” button is there as you can see here on the left. The Delete confirmation Dialog with rounded edges and its opacity is also shown.

As for usability, there is nothing wrong with this app. It records in very good quality. It give you the ability to annotate your Voice Notes, the notes are shown stacked as expected for an iOS app. You can rename your recordings and share them as desired. The app gives you graphic indication of Recording status, with the running time shown in red at the top. Unfortunately, the app cannot run on the background, so you have to Snap the app to use other apps.

The App is described as follows by IPT Inc. in the Store:

Lucky Voice is a professional voice recorder. It is a simple, fun, and easy to use audio & voice recorder. Use it to record meetings, lectures, and personal notes, without time limits.

      • Hight-quality handled recording.
      • Easy, convenient user interface and controls.
      • Export to file.
      • Export to SkyDrive.
      • Send by email.

This is just an example of an app from IPT Inc, they have 17 Apps in total in the Store as you can see below. Can you notice the iOS icons with rounded edges. Yes, hell has frozen over in the Windows Store :-). You should try their other apps too, like Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram Apps. I am sure those of you coming from the iOS platform will surely appreciate these apps. Just take a look at their Lucky Notes App, it has leather skeuomorph. I had to laugh at that one. Feel free to try these apps, most of them are free, and they are getting very good ratings in the Store.

6th Anniversary of the first iPhone

Happy 6th Anniversary dear iPhone, today; 6 years ago you were born and you revolutionized the world with your ease of use. Lets call it like it is; Apple changed everything when it came to smartphones.

iPhone, iPhone 2G…iPhone First Generation (whichever you prefer) was released on June 29th, 2007 available exclusively for AT&T. It was one the first smartphone that had a full touchscreen with multi touch capabilities. As Jobs himself has said his address when introducing the iPhone as in his address, Jobs said, “I have been looking forward to this for two and a half years”, and that “today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.” Jobs introduced the iPhone as a combination of three devices: a “widescreen iPod with touch controls”; a “revolutionary mobile phone”; and a “breakthrough Internet communicator”.

The phone sold millions of units, a hit! It featured Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g Wi-fi, a much criticized 2.0 Megapixel camera. It did not have support for third party apps or even an App Store. No MMS or copy paste capabilities (although, these came in later software versions, no clue why they didn’t include it out of the box.) The original iPhone only had GPRS/EDGE connectivity to Cingular/AT&T’s network at that time, no 3G support. The CPU Samsung S3C6400 (ARM11 core) with a CPU Speed of 400 MHz. Also featured RAM of Onboard RAM: 128 MB with L1 cache of 16kb.

The iPhone came in 4GB/8GB and 16GB versions.

As I wrap this article up I just want to say Thank you, to Steve Jobs and all his brilliance. Thank you for bringing these fantastic products to the masses.

Thank you for bringing us the first user-friendly smartphone.

Thank you.

Nike+ Fuelband Review

We all have those gadgets we don’t “need” but we feel that they encourage us to do better or they give us a sense of security. The Nike+ FuelBand was given to me for my birthday this year and it’s a really neat device. It shows; fuel points earned, calories burned, current time, steps made, and displays a message when you reach your goal of fuel points for the day.

The device allows you to set a goal via mobile device [Bluetooth] or computer [USB cable] which will come into effect the next calendar day. Once the day begins your Nike Fuel points will reset to 0. Here’s where some trouble may occur. Even though the Fuel Band gives you points for being active and moving around it gives you points for just waving your arm in the air. Though this is a small issue, as long as the user doesn’t intentionally wave his arm around to get more points it should still be an accurate result.

As you obtain more points the lights on the top of the band will increase from left to right showing you a scale model of your goal. [The more lights the closest you are to reaching your goal] Once you reach your goal a message will appear on the device that says “GOAL” and you can enjoy a celebration with the Nike guy [who resembles the old Cingular Wireless person in the logo]. Throughout the day or once every few days you can sync your Fuel Band with your mobile device to view your progress from the time you begin using your device. The battery has lasted me a week at times, which is really convenient. The charger that comes with it [pictured below] is a USB Cable. It has the ability to charge by being connected to a computer or a wall plugin.

Though the design of the product is innovative it’s price is a drawback. Listed at $149.95 on the Apple Store it will put a dent in your wallet. The Nike+ Fuel Band is a great gift for any active person from the age of 13 and up. If you’re trying to improve your daily activity and continuously improve it can be a great encouragement to Just Do It™.

Drifting is the act of maneuvering a vehicle through corners at speeds and angles that exceed the vehicle’s grip. A drift is when a driver performs a controlled slide through corners while adhering to the racing line. Drifting involves fast cars, super skilled drivers and hardcore fans.

It’s a combination of driving skill, style and showmanship. It’s all about loss of the rear wheel traction while keeping the race car in total control. Drifting is so popular because it brings all the best aspects of motor sports into one package. Highly skilled drivers control a high powered street car past its limit, sideways at high speed, burning rubber. It can’t get any better!

Instagram received a lot of feedback from their users and independent news groups disagreeing with the new changes that were to be made to their Terms of Service [TOS].
